What My Soul Craves

My soul longs for that which is good, righteous and holy. When my soul sees or experiences this, it leaps for joy. I feel warmth come over me like a young child laying in the tall grass gazing up at the clear blue sky on a spring day. It is warm and comfortable. My soul was created for goodness. My soul was created for communion with God and others. My soul longs for connection. My soul longs to do good. It longs to do those things that bring joy to others. The satisfaction that my soul senses when it does good is profoundly different than the satisfaction I feel when I have done good for myself. The satisfaction my soul feels from doing good is complete and whole as if to say … this … this is what I was made for. It is easy, even when it is hard. Joy is complete when we are doing good. Doing good is what our souls were crafted for. When we do good, we are showing God we love Him. When we seek to love others first and put the needs of others above our own, our soul smiles and God is pleased.

Doing good is not about earning your way to heaven or staying out of hell. It is not about following the “rules”. It is about seeing the needs around you everyday and doing something to meet those needs. There are needs around us everyday but we are blind to them because we are so engrossed in our own lives that we pass them by. Because of sin in the world, God’s creation is broken and sick. God wants to heal His creation, but He has decided to use you and me to do the work. If the truth be told, it is you and me that broke it to begin with. Creation is broken every time we exercise a selfish action. Creation is torn when we think only of ourselves. Creation is scratched when we put our own needs above the needs of others. Creation is dented when we don’t share the bounty God has blessed us with. Creation is twisted when we fail to appreciate, and be good stewards of, the blessings God has bestowed on us. Our souls begin to rot as we pull away from others and of this God is not pleased. God wants to restore His creation to where it was before sin entered into the picture and we have a key role to play. Our souls were crafted for goodness so feed it what is wants.

Mr. Z, what you have written is so true. The Bible says that we were created unto good works. Yet it also says that our good works will never, as you say "get us to heaven or keep us from hell".

We truly magnify our creator and bless His creation when we do what we were created for.

Truly, our soul craves for one thing. Sadly, because of our desensetization to what is holy and good we mistake our cravings for other things; the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life.

How fulfilled we are when we give ourselves to do good works. For then we have stumbled upon our very purpose of our existence.
